Mysore holds around a million visitors across the Dasara fortnight. The festival is worth seeing. Sleeping in the middle of it is not.

Three things happen at once in central Mysore during Dasara.
Traffic restrictions. Roads around the Palace, Sayyaji Rao Road and the Bannimantap stretch are progressively closed and diverted, heavily so on 21 October. A hotel two kilometres from the Palace can still take an hour to reach.
Price surges. Central hotel rates commonly double or triple across the final weekend, and the good rooms are gone months ahead.
Noise and crowds that don’t stop. Cultural programmes run late, the Exhibition grounds stay busy until closing, and the streets carry foot traffic well past midnight. This matters most if you’re travelling with young children or older parents.
A stay on the outskirts flips the equation. You get a quiet base, parking, and space for a group, then you drive in for the illumination one evening, the Exhibition another, and the procession on the final day.
The trade-off is honest: you’ll spend 30 to 60 minutes each way, and you should leave earlier than feels necessary on 21 October. In exchange, you sleep properly, cook or dine on your own schedule, and your group stays together instead of scattered across three hotel rooms.

For a two-day trip built around one or two events, a city resort makes sense. For a family of eight staying four nights, an entire property outside the city is both cheaper and calmer.
